1861: Mary Ann Oliver Monroe gives birth to Cynthia Ann Monroe (McCluskey) in Cumberland County in south central Kentucky. Cynthia is Charles Roger Vance’s great grandmother.

2009: Mildred A. “Tootie” Carl Shuman dies in Rock Falls, Illinois. She is Mary Ann Shuman Boemecke’s mother.

1658: Michael Thorwart, Sr. is born in Auenheim, France, just across the border from Diersheim, Germany. He is Douglas Harold Boemecke’s sixth great grandfather.

1821: Margaret Adams marries William Jones in the Hagerstown, Maryland area. They are Mary Ann Shuman Boemecke’s fourth great grandparents.

1909: Louis A. Boemecke dies in Balltown, Iowa. He is Douglas Harold Boemecke’s grandfather.

1944: Ida Mae LaGrange Faulkenberg’s grandmother, Sally Cassidy LaGrange, dies in Apalona, Indiana. She is Dr. Samuel Mudd’s third cousin. Dr. Mudd was convicted (perhaps wrongfully) of conspiring to assassinate former Perry County resident Abraham Lincoln.

1938: Thelma Smith Graddy’s grandfather, Washington “Logan” Smith, dies in Flannigan Township, Hamilton County, Illinois.

1977: Jimmy Carter is sworn in as President. Jimmy’s fourth great grandmother was named Mary Margaret Faulkenborough. Mary’s brother was Henry Faulkenberg’s fourth great grandfather, making Henry and Jimmy Carter sixth cousins.

1933: John Henry Vance dies in Barren County in south central Kentucky. He is Charles Roger Vance’s great grandfather.

1945: The Battle of the Bulge comes to an end along the border of Belgium and Luxembourg, where many of Henry Faulkenberg’s ancestors are from. Henry is there with the US Army.

1815: Thomas Jordan dies in what is now Thompsonville in Franklin County, Illinois. Thomas is an early Illinois pioneer, building forts here as early as 1804. Thomas’s fifth great grandson is Roger Graddy. The town of West Frankfort is named after Thomas’s son Francis, who built a fort west of the original Jordan fort.

1776: The North Carolina militia defeats Great Britain at the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge. The only death on the Patriot side is John Grady, who is the brother of Roger Graddy’s 4th great grandfather, Fred Grady. John is the first North Carolinian to die in the Revolutionary War.

1910: Newton Smith dies in Woodford County, Kentucky, just west of Lexington. He is the grandfather of Mary Christine Tharp Vance, Charles Roger Vance’s mother.

1996: Jeff Faulkenberg coaches the Highland Bulldogs boys’ basketball team to a 67-50 victory over the Triad Knights in the Class AA Sectional final at Salem Community High School. It’s one of just three IHSA Sectional titles the Mississippi Valley Conference has won in boys’ basketball as of the summer of 2022. The MVC was founded in 1971.

1751: President James Madison is born in Port Conway, Virginia. He is Elizabeth Taylor Graddy’s second cousin once removed. Elizabeth was born in New Harmony, Indiana in 1828 and is buried in Carmi, Illinois. She is Roger Graddy’s second great grandmother.

1834: Josephine Woch (Boemecke) is born in Pennsylvania. Eventually, she marries John Boemecke, Sr., a German immigrant, and the two of them move to Iowa. They are Douglas Harold Boemecke’s great grandparents.

1860: German born Margaretha Hauss Matz dies. Her husband died years earlier, and her son migrated to Iowa somewhere around the time of her death. 1852: Elisabetha Ruebenacker Kaufmann dies in Piopolis, Illinois the day after her husband dies. She and her husband were one of nine German families to found Piopolis. They are Mildred Sheley Graddy’s second great grandparents.

1853: Francis Georges, wife Rosalie Backes Georges, their children, and Rosalie’s father Andre Backes arrive in New York City in a ship called the Samuel Radger. Francis and Rosalie are Henry Faulkenberg’s great grandparents. Rosalia Georges Faulkenberg is likely named after her grandmother Rosalie Backes Georges.

1854: Jean Joseph LaGrange, 41 and single, arrives in New Orleans in a ship called the Heidelberg. This is the last line of Jeff Faulkenberg’s ancestry to come to America. Police would not be able to find Otto for almost a decade. Otto is Henry Otto Faulkenberg’s grandfather.

She and the rest of the Jacques/James family were some of the first (or possibly the very first) Belgians to come to Perry County, Indiana, which is in the top 1% of all US counties in Belgian ancestry. 1689: In Albany, Catyra Lambertse Van Valkenburg Huyck gives birth to Anna Huyck, who eventually goes on to marry her first cousin, Hendrick Van Valkenburg. Anna and Hendrick (who eventually used the name “Henry Faulkenborough”) are the fifth great grandparents of Henry Otto Faulkenberg and Jimmy Carter.

1835: Maria Susanna Rauen Follman gives birth to Jacobi Follman in Germany. He is Douglas Harold Boemecke’s great grandfather.

1843: Elizabeth Marian Taylor and Richard C. Graddy are married in Posey County, Indiana. They are Roger Graddy’s second great grandparents. Richard was born in New Harmony, Indiana during the first utopian period. Elizabeth was also born there, but it might have been during the second utopian period.

This is perhaps the most convincing document that proves the Faulkenbergs are the ancestors of the Van Valkenburgs. It is a deposition of Andrew Falkenburg (also often printed as Faulkenborough). Here he says that he and his brothers Henry and Jacob moved from Albany, New York to Virginia. At this same time, records indicate that “Andries, Hendrick, and Jochem Van Valkenburg” disappeared from Albany. All three brothers are Anna Huyck Van Valkenburg’s sons. There are plenty of records that connect the Faulkenboroughs/Falkenburgs of Virginia and the Carolinas to the Indiana Faulkenbergs/Faulkenburgs/Faulkenboroughs. It’s also worth noting that the Dutch V sounds a lot like an F.
